An Abyssinian Portrait That Glows
An Abyssinian is a lean, athletic cat with an unmistakable coat. Each hair is banded with two or three shades of color, a pattern called ticking, which gives the fur a warm, sun-washed glow with no stripes on the body. Large, alert ears, almond eyes rimmed in dark liner and a slim, graceful build complete the picture, and a custom Abyssinian portrait made from your photo keeps all of it.
The classic color is ruddy, a rich orange-brown ticked with black, but there are also red (sorrel), blue and fawn Abys, with eyes in green, gold or copper. Owners know the personality too: curious, climbing, into everything. That energy is both the charm and the challenge of photographing an Aby.
Upload a photo, pick a style and preview it free in about 30 seconds. Framed prints start at $129 and canvas at $89, with the name added free. For other sleek, active cats, see Bengal cat portraits and Siamese cat portraits, or browse all custom cat portraits.

How to Photograph an Abyssinian
Abys rarely stay still, so the secret is a plan, not a pose:
- Shoot a burst. Hold the shutter button when they stop to stare at something, then pick the sharpest frame.
- Use bright, indirect light. Fast cats blur in dim rooms. A sunny window gives a quick shutter speed and shows the ticking.
- Try side light. Light from one side makes the banding in each hair glow, while flat overhead light makes the coat look plain brown.
- Show the ears. Big, upright ears are a hallmark, so keep both fully in frame.
- Lure with play. A feather wand held just beside the lens brings the eyes forward and the ears up.
- Go to their perch. Abys love heights, and a shelf or cat tree puts the face at your eye level against a clean background.
- Tap on the eyes. The dark liner makes them easy to focus on and gives the portrait its intensity.
Best Styles for an Abyssinian Painting
Classic Oil is the natural home for an Abyssinian’s coat. Rich Dutch-master tones of amber, bronze and umber make the ticking glow, and that lean, alert face looks like a portrait of a very sleek hunter.
Watercolor Earthy uses warm brown and earth-tone washes that echo a ruddy or sorrel coat, for a softer, gentler piece.
Stained Glass is the bold pick. The jewel-toned glass window with an arched border sets that warm coat against deep blues and greens. The fine ticking becomes broader color, so choose it for impact, and choose Classic Oil if you want every fine detail kept.
Abyssinian Portrait FAQ
Ticking shows when the photo has side light and a sharp coat. Flat, dim photos make any ruddy cat look solid brown. Classic Oil and Watercolor Earthy keep the warm gradations best. Try your photo in a couple of styles in the free preview, and if the coat looks flat, retake it near a window.
Take a burst of photos near a bright window, using a toy to hold their attention for a moment, and choose the frame where the eyes and ears are sharp. A slightly imperfect background is fine, but a blurry face won’t make a good portrait. Previews are free, so you can test a few.
Yes. Blue, fawn and red Abys are made the same way as ruddy ones, from your photo. The longhaired Somali is too, and any cat without a recognizable breed. The portrait follows the coat in your photo, so shoot in daylight to keep the softer colors true.
A 16″ × 16″ framed print ($129) or 12″ × 12″ canvas ($89) is a good fit for a face-and-ears close-up. For a leaner, full-length pose on a perch, the 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) shows more of that long, graceful body. Frames come in Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black.
Yes. Upload a single photo with both pets in it and we’ll include them together in one portrait at no extra charge. Abys are social and often hang out with a companion, so a pair photo can be great. Choose a moment when both faces are visible and sharp.
