Custom Cat Portraits Made From Your Photo
A custom cat portrait should look like *your* cat: the exact shade of their eyes, the stripes on their forehead, that famously unimpressed expression. At Frame Your Pets, every cat portrait is created from your own photo, so those details carry through. Upload, choose a style, and you’ll see a free preview in about 30 seconds, with no account or card needed.
Cats come in a huge range of looks, and each brings its own photo challenges. A Maine Coon is all ruff and ear tufts, a Ragdoll is about those blue eyes, and a black cat needs the right light to show any detail. Our breed and coat pages share specific tips for each.
When your preview feels right, choose a framed print (from $129) or a gallery-wrap canvas (from $89). Add your cat’s name free for a personalized cat portrait, approve the digital proof we email before printing, and your cat art ships free across the US.
Try It With Your Cat’s Photo
No need to wrangle your cat into a pose: any clear photo from your camera roll can work.
How to Photograph Your Cat for a Portrait
Cats rarely pose on request, so work with them rather than against them:
- Shoot when they’re relaxed. Right after a nap or a meal, most cats will sit still long enough for a few frames.
- Use window light, not flash. Flash causes glowing eye shine and flattens fur; a bright window to one side is ideal.
- Mind the pupils. In dim rooms cats’ pupils go wide and black; in brighter light you’ll see more eye color, which makes a more striking portrait.
- Get level with their eyes. Photograph from their perch or the floor instead of from standing height.
- Use a sound, not a treat. A crinkle or soft click just above your phone earns an alert look without them walking toward the camera.
- Keep the whiskers. Choose a photo where the muzzle and whiskers are sharp; they add a lot of character.
- Take a burst. Hold the shutter for a series and pick the frame with open eyes and ears forward.
Choosing a Style for Your Cat
Three styles we especially love for cats:
- Watercolor Earthy — warm browns and earth tones in a soft watercolor. Beautiful on tabbies, tortoiseshells, calicos and gingers.
- Sparkle — a polished, semi-realistic look on a dreamy blue sparkle background. Lovely for long-haired cats and any cat with striking eyes.
- Galactic Knight — your cat as a sci-fi knight with a glowing green sword, in an oil-portrait finish. Perfect for the cat who clearly believes they run the house.
Cats with big personalities also look magnificent in The General, dressed in a historic uniform with gold epaulets. Previews are free, so try the same photo in a few styles, or browse all our styles.
Cat Portrait FAQ
The portrait is created from your photo, so eye color comes from what your camera captured. For the truest color, photograph your cat in bright, indirect daylight without flash, which avoids eye shine and shows more of the iris. If the eyes in your preview look off, try another photo where they’re sharp and well lit. Previews are free.
Any clear photo where the face is visible and reasonably sharp can work, including one you took months ago. Candid shots of your cat lounging or watching birds often turn out better than posed ones. Scroll your camera roll for a close-up in good light, and try two or three in the free preview to see which works best.
Yes. Upload one photo showing both cats and we’ll include them together at no extra charge. Snuggled-up nap photos are ideal, as long as both faces are visible and in focus. A square 24″×24″ framed print ($149) or an 18″×24″ gallery-wrap canvas ($119) gives a pair plenty of room.
Framed prints come in 16″×16″ ($129), 16″×24″ ($139), 24″×24″ ($149) and 24″×36″ ($169), each in a solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black frame. Gallery-wrap canvases run from 12″×12″ ($89) to 24″×36″ ($139), and a high-res digital file is $29. Shipping is free in the US.
Yes. Older or slightly soft photos can still make a lovely portrait, and the free preview lets you see the result before paying. Choose the photo where your cat’s eyes and face are clearest, and add their name for free if you’d like. Our pet memorial portraits page has more gentle guidance on choosing a photo.
