A Maine Coon Portrait Worthy of the Mane

A Maine Coon portrait has a lot to capture. This is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, with a shaggy, water-resistant coat that grows longer on the ruff, belly and britches, lynx-like tufts on the ears, tufted paws and a long, bushy tail. Our custom Maine Coon portraits are created from your own photo, so your cat’s real coat and expression come through, not a generic breed look.

Brown tabby is the classic Maine Coon color, but the breed comes in many others, from solid black and white to silver, red and tortoiseshell, with eyes in green, gold or copper (white Maine Coons can have blue or odd-colored eyes). Whatever your cat’s coloring, the right style makes it shine.

How to Photograph a Maine Coon

Big, fluffy cats need a little extra thought to show off their best features:

  • Shoot the ruff head-on. A straight-on or slight three-quarter angle shows the full mane framing the face.
  • Show the ear tufts. Against a plain, lighter wall, those lynx tips stand out instead of disappearing into the background.
  • Use soft side light. Window light from one side brings out the layers in a long coat; overhead light flattens it into a blur of fluff.
  • Brush first, if they’ll allow it. A quick groom of the ruff and chest gives a cleaner outline.
  • Leave some room. Don’t crop the mane, but keep the face large enough that the eyes stay sharp.
  • Catch the tail. If your Maine Coon wraps that plumed tail around their paws when sitting, that’s a great pose.
  • Skip the flash. Green, gold and copper eyes show their true color in daylight.

Best Styles for a Maine Coon Painting

  • The General — an antique oil portrait in a historic military uniform with gold epaulets. A big, dignified Maine Coon with a full mane wears it like they were born to command.
  • Watercolor Earthy — warm browns and earth tones that echo the classic brown tabby coat and keep the soft, layered texture of long fur.
  • Sparkle — polished and semi-realistic on a dreamy blue sparkle background. Ideal for silver, white or smoke Maine Coons, and for anyone who wants a softer, sweeter look.

A big cat suits a big frame: a 24″×24″ or 24″×36″ print gives the ruff and tail room to breathe. Not sure? Previews are free, so try your photo in all three.

Questions

Maine Coon Portrait FAQ

It will show what your photo shows. Pick a photo where the tufts are visible against the background and the ruff isn’t cropped or flattened by a hand or blanket. Soft side lighting helps the layers of the coat read clearly. If the first preview misses something, try another photo; previews are free and take about 30 seconds.

Larger formats suit this breed’s size and fluff. A 24″×24″ framed print ($149) is a great square option for a sitting cat with the full ruff, and a 24″×36″ ($169) suits a pose with the tail on show. On a smaller budget, an 18″×24″ gallery-wrap canvas ($119) still gives plenty of room.

You don’t have to. Maine Coons take several years to reach full size and grow in their ruff, so a kitten portrait captures a stage that won’t last. Some owners order one now and another once the mane fills in. Use a sharp, well-lit photo; kittens move fast, so take a burst and pick the clearest frame.

Yes. Upload one photo with both pets in it and we’ll include them together at no extra charge. Because Maine Coons are so large, pick a photo where the other pet isn’t hidden behind all that fur and both faces are in focus. A 24″×24″ or 24″×36″ print gives a pair plenty of room.

After you order, we email a digital proof. Production takes 1–2 business days once you approve it, then it ships free in the US by USPS Priority, usually arriving in 2–5 business days. It’s printed on museum-grade paper and framed in solid wood, or printed on gallery-wrap canvas, ready to hang.
