A Dachshund Portrait as Big as Their Ego
A dachshund portrait has one job: capture the dog who thinks they’re ten feet tall. Whether yours is a smooth red, a wirehaired grump with eyebrows for days, or a longhaired cream with feathered ears, we turn your favorite photo into custom dachshund art that looks like *them*, not a generic wiener dog.
Doxies come in more colors and patterns than almost any breed: black and tan, chocolate, cream, wild boar, brindle, piebald and dapple. Those patches and spots are what make your dog yours, so the portrait is created from your photo and keeps their markings, the tan eyebrow dots and that famous head tilt.

Photo Tips for Long, Low Dogs
Dachshunds are built close to the ground, so a few small tweaks make a big difference:
- Get down on the floor. Shoot at nose level, not from above, so you see their face instead of the top of their head and that long back.
- Frame the head and chest. A close-up of the face reads better on a wall than a full-length side view, which leaves lots of empty space above and below.
- Want the whole dog? Pick a photo where they’re sitting up, begging or curled in a donut. Those poses fit a frame far better than a full sideways stretch.
- Dapple and piebald coats need soft, even daylight. Harsh sun bleaches the light patches and hides the pattern.
- Black and tan or chocolate doxies: face them toward a window so the tan eyebrow points and eyes catch the light.
- Wirehaired? Brush out the beard and brows first, they carry the whole expression.
- Skip the flash. It flattens the coat and gives eyes that eerie glow.
Which Style Suits a Dachshund?
The General is practically made for doxies. They were bred in Germany to take on badgers, and they’ve carried themselves like decorated officers ever since. An antique oil portrait in a gold-epauletted uniform simply tells the truth.
Pop loves a bright red or dapple coat. The paint-splatter background turns a small dog into a big, loud statement piece, which is exactly how most doxies see themselves.
Watercolor Earthy is the gentle pick. Warm browns flatter red, chocolate, cream and wild boar coats, and the soft finish works beautifully for a senior dog with a graying muzzle or a dachshund memorial portrait.
Dachshund Portrait FAQ
Yes. Your portrait is created from your photo, so spots, patches and dapple swirls carry through as long as they’re visible in the picture. Use a sharp, well-lit photo taken in daylight rather than under yellow lamps, and check the free preview closely before you order. You’ll also get a digital proof by email before anything is printed.
Most people choose a head-and-chest close-up, which shows off the expression and fills the frame nicely. If you want the full body, pick a photo where your dog is sitting up, lying curled or posing front-on. A long side-on stretch can work, but the face ends up small, so preview a couple of photos and compare.
It does. Wirehaired doxies tend to look fantastic in The General or Pop because the beard and bushy brows give the portrait lots of character. Longhaired coats with feathered ears suit the watercolor styles. Whatever the coat, a clear photo with the face in focus gives the best result, and the preview costs nothing.
Yes. Upload a single photo that shows both dogs and we’ll include them together in one portrait at no extra charge. Doxies love to pile up, so a photo of them sharing a bed or blanket works well. Try to get both faces turned toward the camera and in focus.
Yes, and many people do. Pick the clearest photo you have where your doxie’s face is in focus, even if it’s a few years old. Phone photos, scans of prints and screenshots from your camera roll all work. Upload a few into the free preview and choose the one that feels most like them.
