Your Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait, Made From Your Photo
There’s a reason Berners stop traffic on walks. The jet-black coat, the rich rust on the cheeks and legs, the white blaze running down into that cross-shaped chest marking, and the little rust dots above the eyes that make every expression look thoughtful. A Bernese Mountain Dog portrait should hold onto all of it.
We create your custom Berner art from your own photo, so those tricolor markings stay exactly where they belong. Pick from ten styles, from warm watercolor to a grand antique oil portrait, and see a watermarked preview in about 30 seconds, free.
Because Berners are big dogs with big presence, many owners go large: framed prints run up to 24″×36″ ($169) in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black. Approve the digital proof we email, and your portrait is printed on museum-grade paper and shipped free in the US.

Getting Detail Into a Black, Rust and White Coat
Tricolor coats are gorgeous and tough to photograph, because cameras struggle with black and white side by side. Here’s what works:
- Shoot in soft, even light. Overcast days and open shade keep detail in the black coat without blowing out the white chest.
- Make sure the eyes catch light. Dark eyes in a black face disappear in dim rooms. Face your Berner toward the brightest window.
- Include the chest. That white Swiss cross marking is a signature, so frame from the top of the head down past the chest.
- Kneel to eye level. Shooting down at a big dog makes the head look small and the body short.
- Don’t get too close. A phone lens right up at the nose exaggerates it. Step back and zoom in a little (2× works well) instead.
- Wipe the drool first. You’ll thank us later.
Which Style Flatters a Tricolor Coat?
Watercolor Earthy is our top pick for Berners. Its warm browns pick up the rust markings and make the whole portrait feel cozy, like a cabin in the Swiss Alps. It’s also a peaceful choice for a memorial.
The General suits a dog this dignified. A Berner’s calm, steady face looks remarkably at home in an antique oil portrait with a historic uniform and gold epaulets, and it works wonderfully at large sizes.
Watercolor Blue offers a cooler, airier alternative. The soft blue background contrasts with the black coat so the outline of your Berner reads clearly, and the rust and white still glow.
Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait FAQ
It shouldn’t, as long as your photo shows the detail. Black coats look flat in dim indoor photos, so pick one taken in daylight where you can see texture in the fur and a sparkle in the eyes. Compare a couple of styles in the free preview, since some handle dark coats differently than others.
For a big dog with a big personality, many owners choose 24″×24″ ($149) or the largest 24″×36″ ($169) framed print as a centerpiece. The 16″×24″ ($139) is our most popular size and suits most walls. On canvas, the 24″×36″ is $139. All ship free in the US.
Yes. Losing a Berner is hard, and a portrait can be a gentle way to keep them close. Choose the clearest photo you have, even an older one or a photo from their younger days, as long as the face is in focus. You can add their name to the portrait for free.
Absolutely. Berner puppies are irresistible, and a portrait is a lovely way to remember how small they once were. Puppies wiggle, so take lots of photos in burst mode and pick a sharp one with the face clearly visible. Sparkle and the watercolor styles look especially sweet with puppy fluff.
Yes. Bernedoodles, Great Bernards, Berner-Aussie mixes and any other mix work the same way. Curly and wavy coats come through from your photo, so make sure the eyes aren’t hidden under fringe. See also our Goldendoodle portraits page for tips on curly coats.
