A Border Collie Portrait as Sharp as Your Dog

Border Collies are the workaholics of the dog world. The intense herding “eye”, the semi-pricked ears with one tip that never quite agrees with the other, the white blaze and collar: those details make a Border Collie portrait unmistakable, and they all come straight from your photo.

The breed comes in more looks than people expect. Classic black and white, red and white, blue merle, red merle, tricolor and sable, in a rough or smooth coat, sometimes with one blue eye. Since every portrait is created from your own picture, your custom Border Collie art shows the exact markings and eye color of your dog.

The hardest part is getting a still photo. Once you have one, upload it, pick a style and get a free watermarked preview in about 30 seconds. Pay only if you love it. Herding fans should also see our Australian Shepherd portraits and Corgi portraits, or every breed on the custom dog portrait page.

Photo Tips for Black, White and Always Moving

A Border Collie’s two-tone coat and nonstop energy are the main challenges:

  • Ask for a down or a wait. A collie that knows a stay command is your best friend here. Ask for it, then shoot.
  • Expose for both colors. Bright sun turns the white blaze pure white and the black into shadow. Open shade keeps detail in both.
  • Hold their focus. Raise a ball or toy right above your phone and you’ll get that intense collie stare straight down the lens.
  • Save the action shots. Running and jumping photos are usually blurred around the face. Pick a still, sharp one for the portrait.
  • Check merle and odd eyes. Blue eyes and merle patches show best in daylight, not under yellow lamps.
  • Tire them out first. A walk or a game of fetch beforehand makes a calm, sitting collie much more likely.

Best Art Styles for a Border Collie

Watercolor Blue is our favorite for black and white collies. The soft blue washes add color to a monochrome coat without fighting it, and blue merles look beautiful in it too. It’s calm, classic and a fitting Border Collie memorial portrait.

Pop matches the energy. Bold colors and paint-splatter backgrounds suit a dog who treats every day as a job, and the crisp black and white coat looks graphic and modern against all that color.

For the brainy one in the family, try Galactic Knight. Your collie becomes a sci-fi knight with a glowing green sword in an oil-portrait look, and that focused herding stare makes a very believable hero. Previews are free, so try all three with the same photo.

Questions

Border Collie Portrait FAQ

A little softness in the body is usually fine, but the face and eyes need to be reasonably sharp, since the portrait is created from your photo. Use a stay command, burst mode or a photo taken right after a long walk. Previews are free, so you can test a borderline photo before ordering anything.

Yes. Eye color comes from your photo, so a blue eye, two blue eyes or one of each carries through. Shoot in natural daylight without flash, which can turn eyes green or white, and make sure both eyes are open and in focus. It’s one of the most striking details in a Border Collie portrait.

Red, merle, tricolor and sable collies all work, because the coloring comes from your picture. Indoor bulbs are the main problem: they can turn red coats orange and make blue merle look muddy. Daylight near a window, or outside in open shade, gives the truest color for any pattern.

Yes. Upload one photo with both dogs and we combine them into a single portrait. Herding breeds often sit side by side nicely on command, which helps. Keep both faces in focus and at a similar distance from the camera, and pick a wider size like the 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139).

For a head-and-shoulders portrait, the 16″ × 16″ framed print ($129) or a 12″ × 16″ canvas ($99) fits most walls. A full sitting pose with the white chest ruff looks great at 16″ × 24″ ($139 framed). Every size ships free in the US, and your dog’s name can be added for free.
