A Shiba Inu Portrait With Spirit
The Shiba Inu is the smallest of Japan’s native spitz breeds, and it carries itself like royalty anyway. The fox-like face, small triangular ears, tightly curled tail and that cool, slightly judgmental side-eye are what make a Shiba Inu portrait so recognizable.
The dense double coat comes in red, black and tan, sesame or cream, with pale markings called urajiro on the cheeks, throat, chest and legs. Those markings shape the whole face, and they’re easy to lose in a bad photo. Each portrait is created from your photo, so your custom Shiba art keeps your dog’s true color and expression, whether that’s the famous Shiba smile or pure, dignified disdain.
Upload a photo, pick a style and see a watermarked preview in about 30 seconds. Pay only if you love it, then choose a solid-wood framed print from $129 or a canvas from $89. Spitz fans should also see our Husky portraits and Samoyed portraits, or every breed on the custom dog portrait page.

Photo Tips for a Dog Who Won’t Pose
Shibas are famously uncooperative models. Work with them, not against them:
- Shoot candid, not posed. Asking a Shiba to sit and stay often ends in a turned back. Snap them relaxing in their favorite spot instead.
- Use burst mode. Hold the shutter while they glance your way; one frame usually catches the look.
- Show the urajiro. The cream markings on the cheeks and chest wash out in harsh light. Bright shade keeps them distinct from the red coat.
- Daylight for true red. Warm indoor bulbs make a red Shiba look orange, and sesame coats lose their black tipping.
- Ears forward. A crinkling treat bag gets those triangle ears up and alert in an instant.
- Brush in shedding season. Shibas blow their coat about twice a year; a quick brush tidies the tufts sticking out of the outline.
Best Art Styles for a Shiba Inu
Watercolor Earthy is our first pick for red and sesame Shibas. Warm brown and earth-tone washes sit beautifully next to a fox-red coat and the cream urajiro, giving a calm, natural look that suits a dignified dog.
Pop is for the Shiba with attitude. Bold color and paint-splatter energy make the most of a fox face and curled tail, and black and tan or cream Shibas look especially vivid against the bright background.
Vector Look turns your Shiba into a bold, cartoon-style character on a clean white background. The breed’s clean lines and expressive face already look animated, so this style feels right at home, and it stays crisp at small sizes. Previews are free, so try the same photo in each.
Shiba Inu Portrait FAQ
Often, yes. A three-quarter angle with both eyes visible works well, and the classic Shiba side-eye can make a great portrait. What matters is a sharp, well-lit face. Fully side-on profiles hide one eye and are harder, so take several candid shots and test the best one with a free preview.
Yes, if they’re clear in your photo. The portrait is created from your picture, so shoot in bright shade or near a window rather than in harsh sun, which can blow the cream into plain white. Make sure the cheeks and chest face the light, since those markings shape the whole expression.
Yes. Sesame coats with black-tipped hairs and black and tan Shibas with their tan eyebrow points both come through from your photo. Daylight is important: indoor lamps can muddy sesame into plain brown and hide tan markings on a black coat. The free preview lets you check the color first.
Yes. Upload one photo with both pets together and we combine them in a single portrait. Shibas are often called cat-like, so a shared portrait is a fun choice. Both faces should be in focus and at a similar distance from the camera, and a 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) gives them room.
After you order, we email a digital proof for approval. Production takes 1–2 business days after you approve it, then it ships free in the US by USPS Priority, usually in 2–5 business days. If it arrives damaged or misprinted, we replace it free. The $29 digital file is the fastest option.
