A Westie Portrait With Big-Dog Confidence
The West Highland White Terrier was bred in Scotland to go after foxes and badgers among the rocks, and it has never forgotten it. A Westie portrait should show that self-assured terrier spirit: the upright pointed ears, the dark almond eyes peering out from the furnishings, and that round, chrysanthemum-shaped head.
Westies are always white, but the coat isn’t simple. A stripped coat is harsh and textured, while a clipped pet trim looks softer and fluffier, and both read differently on camera. Our Westie art is created from your photo, so the trim, the expression and even the slightly grubby beard are all your dog’s own.

Photo Tips for a White Terrier Coat
Westies are quick, curious and very white. Here’s how to get a portrait-ready shot:
- Shoot in shade, not sun. Direct sunlight wipes out the texture in a white coat. Open shade or a bright window works best.
- Frame the head round. The classic Westie look is a full, round face. Shoot straight on at eye level so the head shape reads clearly.
- Ears up. A squeak, a whistle or the word “walk” will usually snap those pointed ears upright.
- Find the eyes. Westie eyes are small and dark and sit under the brow fur. Trim or brush the furnishings so they show.
- Clean the beard. Food and water stain the beard yellowish. A quick wipe keeps the white looking crisp.
- Use a colored background. A blue rug, green lawn or wooden floor gives a white dog a clear outline.
- Try burst mode. Terriers rarely hold still. Take a quick burst and pick the sharpest frame.
Best Art Styles for a Westie
Watercolor Earthy is our first pick for Westies. Warm brown and earth-tone washes give a white coat a soft, natural outline, a bit like a Highland hillside, and it feels cozy in any room.
The General is pure terrier attitude. Your Westie appears in an antique oil portrait wearing a historic military uniform with gold epaulets, and the dark background makes the white coat glow. It suits a dog that already thinks it runs the house.
For something brighter, Pop wraps your Westie in bold, colorful paint splatter. The white coat becomes a clean base for color, and it captures that busy, mischievous energy beautifully. The preview is free, so try your photo in each style and compare.
Westie Portrait FAQ
Not if the photo has detail to start with. Each portrait is created from your picture, so choose one taken in soft daylight where you can see the texture of the coat around the face. If the first preview looks too flat, try a style with a colored background or a different photo. The preview is free.
No, any trim works. The portrait follows your photo, so a stripped coat looks harsh and textured and a clipped coat looks softer, just like your dog. If you prefer how your Westie looked after a particular grooming visit, upload a photo from that day instead.
Yes. Many owners choose a favorite photo from their Westie’s younger years. Older photos and scans of prints work as long as the face is reasonably sharp. You can add your dog’s name for free, and you’ll see a digital proof by email before anything is printed. Our pet memorial portrait page has more ideas.
Yes. Upload one photo showing both dogs and we include them together in one portrait. A black Scottie next to a white Westie is a classic pairing, so make sure the light is even enough to show detail in both coats. A wider size like the 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) gives two dogs room.
Framed prints run from $129 for 16″ × 16″ to $169 for 24″ × 36″, in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black. Gallery-wrap canvas runs from $89 for 12″ × 12″ to $139 for 24″ × 36″. A high-res digital file is $29. Shipping is free within the US.
