A Maltese Portrait That Gets White Right

Maltese have been treasured lapdogs for centuries, and it shows. That gentle, trusting face, the jet-black nose and eyes and the silky, pure white coat make a Maltese portrait look elegant almost by default. The trick is keeping all that white bright and detailed, not flat.

Some Maltese wear the floor-length show coat with a top knot, but most live in a short puppy cut or a round teddy-bear face. Some have a little lemon or light tan on the ears, and many have tear staining under the eyes. Every portrait is created from your photo, so your custom Maltese art shows the haircut, bow and face you know.

Upload a photo, choose a style and see a free watermarked preview in about 30 seconds. If you love it, pick a solid-wood frame or a canvas; we email a digital proof before printing and ship free in the US. Other small white dogs live on our Bichon Frise portraits and Shih Tzu portraits pages, and every breed is on the custom dog portrait hub.

Photo Tips for an All-White Coat

White dogs fool phone cameras, which tend to turn them dingy gray or blow them out to pure white. Here’s how to help:

  • No direct sun. Bright sun turns a white coat into a featureless shape. Open shade or a bright window shows the silky texture.
  • Use a colored background. A white Maltese on a white bed vanishes. A blue, green or gray blanket gives clean edges.
  • Tap to focus on the eyes. That also sets the exposure for the face, so the black eyes and nose stay crisp.
  • Freshen up the tear stains. A gentle wipe under the eyes beforehand gives a cleaner look in the portrait.
  • Get down to their level. Shooting from above shrinks a Maltese to a fluffy dot. Sit on the floor instead.
  • Tie up the fringe. A top knot or a quick trim keeps both eyes clearly visible.

Best Art Styles for a Maltese

Watercolor Blue is our top pick. Soft blue washes give a white coat something to stand against, so the silky texture and black eyes pop without the portrait feeling busy. It’s also a gentle choice for a Maltese memorial portrait.

Sparkle suits a pampered Maltese with a top knot and bow. The polished, semi-realistic finish loves a groomed coat, and the dreamy blue sparkle background adds a little glamour.

If your Maltese is more spunky than sweet, try Pop. A pure white dog is a perfect blank canvas for bold colors and paint-splatter backgrounds, and the result is bright, modern and fun in a kid’s room or office. Try the same photo in all three; the preview is free each time.

Questions

Maltese Portrait FAQ

The portrait follows your photo, so lighting matters most. Warm indoor bulbs can tint white fur yellow, and deep shade can make it gray. A spot near a bright window, out of direct sun, keeps the coat clean and white. The free preview lets you check, and you can try another photo if needed.

The portrait is created from your photo, so the best way to minimize tear stains is to gently clean under the eyes before you take it. Light staining often softens in the watercolor styles. Before printing, we email a digital proof so you can see exactly how the finished portrait will look.

Use the look that feels most like your dog. A long coat with a top knot looks elegant in Sparkle or Watercolor Blue, while a round puppy-cut face is adorable in Pop. Previews are free and take about 30 seconds, so many owners try both and pick their favorite.

Yes. Upload a photo with both dogs together and we create one portrait of the pair. Two white dogs side by side can blend together, so a colored background and soft light help keep the outlines clear. A wider print such as the 16″ × 24″ framed ($139) gives each one room.

After ordering, you approve a digital proof by email. Production takes 1–2 business days after approval, and shipping is free in the US by USPS Priority, usually 2–5 business days. It arrives ready to hang, and if it’s damaged or misprinted, we replace it free.
