Whippet Portraits for a Graceful Dog

A Whippet is all curves: the long, arched neck, the deep chest, the tucked waist and the narrow head with small rose-shaped ears folded back. The short, smooth coat shows every line of the body, and the dark, almond-shaped eyes have a soft, thoughtful look. Few breeds suit a clean, artistic portrait as well.

Whippets come in nearly every color: fawn, brindle, black, blue, red, white and parti-colored. They’re also famously calm indoors, which makes them one of the easier sighthounds to photograph at home, curled up in a blanket or stretched across the sofa. Every Whippet portrait is created from your photo, so your dog’s exact color, pattern and posture are kept.

Preview it free, then order a framed print from $129 or a canvas from $89, with the name added free. If you love a sleek sighthound, see Greyhound portraits, Doberman portraits and our custom dog portrait page.

How to Photograph a Whippet’s Shape

This breed is about silhouette and line, so shoot to show the shape:

  • Try a side profile. The arched neck and long nose in profile are the breed’s signature. A head-and-shoulders side view makes a stunning portrait.
  • Shoot a lounging pose. Whippets love blankets. A dog curled up with the head raised often gives the calmest, sharpest photo.
  • Use soft light. The short coat shines in daylight but picks up hard shadows in direct sun. Open shade or a bright window works best.
  • Add contrast behind a black or blue coat. A dark Whippet on a dark sofa disappears. A lighter wall behind helps the outline.
  • Photograph the rose ears relaxed. They fold back at rest and lift when your dog is curious. Both look charming, so pick the one that feels like your dog.
  • Avoid motion blur. For outdoor running photos, use burst mode in bright light, or ask for a stay and shoot from low down.

Art Styles That Match a Sleek Dog

Line Art is a clean ink and pencil line drawing, strictly black and white. A Whippet’s long neck, deep chest and tucked waist translate into pure, graceful contours, so it’s the style that shows off the shape best. It’s also a stylish, modern choice for a gallery wall.

Black & White Charcoal adds soft shading and depth, which flatters brindle and blue coats particularly well and suits a quiet, thoughtful portrait.

For a warm, traditional look, Classic Oil is a realistic Dutch-masters-style oil painting with no costume. It gives a fawn Whippet the dignity of a historic hunting portrait. Previews are free, so try all three on the same photo.

Questions

Whippet Portrait FAQ

They will if your photo shows them. A side profile, or a head-and-shoulders shot with the neck extended, gives the best result. Tight cropping on the face makes any dog look broader, so step back a little. Line Art in particular highlights the outline of the body. Compare styles in the free preview.

Yes, with good light. Dark coats lose detail in shadows, so photograph near a window with light on the face and use a lighter background. Charcoal and Line Art handle dark dogs well because they work with shading and outline. Our guide to black pet photos has more tips.

The portrait follows your photo, so a coat or sweater in the picture usually carries over. If you want a clean look, take the photo without it. If you’d like a costume, Dress-Up lets you type the outfit you want, from a bow tie to a tiny tuxedo, and see the free preview.

A long-bodied dog suits a taller format. The 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) is a popular pick for a seated or standing Whippet, and the 24″ × 36″ ($169) makes a statement piece. For a face-only portrait, 16″ × 16″ ($129) or a 12″ × 12″ canvas ($89) is plenty.

Yes. Upload one photo with both dogs and they’re included in the same portrait at no extra charge. Whippets often curl up together, which makes a lovely image. Pick a photo where both faces are visible and sharp. A pair of sighthounds can look beautiful in a 16″ × 24″ or larger print.
