A Great Dane Portrait at the Right Scale
Great Danes look like statues and act like oversized puppies. The long, square muzzle, the deep chest, the soft jowls and that gentle, slightly worried expression are what a Great Dane portrait needs to catch, whether the ears are cropped upright or left natural and folded.
The coat is short and sleek, but the colors are wonderfully varied: fawn with a black mask, brindle, harlequin, merle, mantle, black and blue. We create every portrait from your photo, so the patches on your harlequin or the stripes on your brindle are your dog’s, not a stock Dane’s. That makes it a natural choice for a Great Dane memorial portrait, too.
A giant breed suits a giant print. Our 24″ × 36″ comes framed in solid wood for $169 or as a gallery-wrap canvas for $139, and smaller sizes start at $89. Preview it free first. Big-dog households should also see our Doberman portraits and Cane Corso portraits, or the custom dog portrait hub.

Photo Tips for a Very Tall Dog
Photographing a Dane is mostly about distance and angle:
- Step back a few feet. Shooting a big dog from very close makes the nose huge and the body tiny. A little distance gives truer proportions.
- Sit them down. A sitting Dane fits a portrait far better than a standing one, and the chest and front legs look powerful.
- Hold your phone at head height. Shooting down from standing height works for a small dog, but for a Dane, get level with the face.
- Watch the black mask. Fawn Danes have a dark mask that swallows the eyes in shade. Face your dog toward a window or open sky.
- Soft light for blue and black. Direct sun makes a blue Dane look silvery gray and puts white hot spots on a black coat.
- Wipe the jowls. A quick wipe of drool makes a real difference at large print sizes.
Best Art Styles for a Great Dane
The General was practically made for Danes. An antique oil portrait in a historic military uniform with gold epaulets suits that tall, regal posture, and it looks seriously impressive at 24″ × 36″ over a fireplace.
Watercolor Earthy is our gentle pick, especially for fawn and brindle Danes. The warm brown and earth-tone washes sit right next to a tawny coat and soften that big frame into something calm. Harlequin and black Danes look striking against the warm background, too.
For a fun twist, try Galactic Knight: your Dane as a sci-fi knight with a glowing green sword, in an oil-portrait look. A giant, noble dog in robes is hard to beat. Previews are free, so compare all three.
Great Dane Portrait FAQ
Go big if your wall allows. The 24″ × 36″ framed print ($169) or canvas ($139) gives a seated Dane room to look as grand as they are. For a head-and-shoulders crop, the 24″ × 24″ framed print ($149) works beautifully. Smaller sizes are fine too, since the portrait scales to fill the print whatever the size.
Either. The portrait is created from your photo, so the ears look the way they do in the picture, cropped and upright or natural and folded. If your Dane’s ears changed over the years, choose the photo that matches how you want to remember them, and make sure both ears are inside the frame.
Patterns come from your photo, so the placement of patches and spots carries through. Even daylight helps most, because harsh sun blows out the white areas and deep shade hides the black ones. Take the photo in bright shade or near a big window, and check that the face markings are sharp.
Yes. Giant breeds have shorter lives, and many owners create a Great Dane memorial portrait from a favorite older photo. Any reasonably sharp picture works, including scans of printed photos. The pet’s name can be printed free, and soft styles like Watercolor Earthy or Watercolor Blue are popular for remembering a gentle giant.
