Custom Labrador Portraits for Every Coat Color
A good labrador retriever portrait has to handle three very different dogs. Yellow Labs run from almost white to fox red. Chocolate Labs carry warm, liver-brown tones that turn muddy in poor light. Black Labs are the hardest of all, because cameras love to swallow their faces into one dark shape.
That’s why every portrait is created from your own photo. The otter tail, the broad head, the kind brown or hazel eyes and the gray chin your senior earned all come from your dog. Pick a style, preview it free, and only order if it feels like your Lab.
Framed prints come in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black from $129, gallery-wrap canvas starts at $89, and your Lab’s name can be added free. Have a mixed pack? See our Golden Retriever portraits, Labradoodle portraits or the full custom dog portrait collection.

Getting a Great Shot of a Black, Yellow or Chocolate Lab
Labs are easy to love and surprisingly hard to photograph well. Try these:
- Black Lab? Face the light. Put your dog facing a window or an open door so light lands on the face. That’s what reveals the eyes and the shape of the muzzle.
- Turn off the flash. Flash bounces off a black or chocolate coat and leaves glowing eyes and shiny patches.
- Yellow Lab? Avoid direct sun. Pale coats lose all texture in bright sunlight. Overcast days are perfect.
- Use a treat at lens height. Labs are food-driven. Hold a treat right above your phone to get that alert, ears-forward look.
- Wait for the sit. A Lab mid-zoomie is blurry. Ask for a sit, reward, then shoot several frames quickly.
- Wipe the nose and chin. Water bowl drips and pond mud show up more than you’d think.
- Fill the frame. Get close enough that the head and chest fill most of the picture.
Which Style Suits Your Labrador?
For most Labs we start with Watercolor Blue. The soft blue background gives yellow and chocolate coats real contrast, and it lifts a black Lab off the page instead of letting it sink into a dark backdrop.
If your Lab is the clown of the house, Pop is a blast: bold colors and paint-splatter energy that suit a dog who lives for the next tennis ball. It’s also a strong choice for black Labs, since the bright palette keeps the face readable.
For a dignified piece, especially for a senior Lab or a family heirloom, try The General. Your dog appears as an antique oil portrait in a historic military uniform with gold epaulets, which is equal parts handsome and hilarious.
Labrador Retriever Portrait FAQ
It depends mostly on the photo. Pick one where light falls on the face, ideally from a window, and where the eyes are in focus. That gives the portrait the detail it needs around the eyes, brow and muzzle. Styles with lighter backgrounds, like Watercolor Blue or Pop, also help a black coat stand out. The preview is free, so test a couple of photos.
You can try, and the free preview will show you how it turns out. For the best portrait, though, choose a photo where your Lab’s face is sharp and fairly close to the camera. Wet coats, splashing water and motion blur hide detail, so a calm photo right after the swim usually works better than one taken mid-leap.
Both look great. Framed prints are printed on museum-grade paper and set in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black frames, from $129 for 16″ × 16″. Gallery-wrap canvas has no frame and a softer, painterly feel, from $89 for 12″ × 12″. Matte Black frames look sharp with yellow Labs, while Pecan and White Oak warm up chocolate coats.

Yes, and many people choose it for exactly that. Use the photo that feels most like your Lab, even if it’s a few years old. A sharp face matters more than a perfect background.
