A Papillon Portrait with Butterfly Ears

Papillon is French for butterfly, and one look at those big, fringed, upright ears explains the name. Add a fine, silky coat, a white blaze up the face, bright dark eyes and a plumed tail arched over the back, and you have one of the most elegant small dogs to turn into art.

The typical Papillon is mostly white with patches of sable, red, black or tricolor, often with color around the ears and eyes. The Phalène, the drop-eared version of the breed, is the same dog with ears that fold like a moth’s wings. Every custom Papillon portrait is created from your photo, so your dog’s exact patches and ear shape are kept.

Preview it free, then order a framed print from $129 or a canvas from $89, with the name added free. For other small, bright-eyed dogs, see Chihuahua portraits, Pomeranian portraits and all our custom dog portraits.

Photo Tips for Fringed Ears and a Busy Brain

Papillons are quick, alert and rarely still. Plan for speed:

  • Use burst mode. Hold the shutter and pick the sharpest frame. Papillons turn their heads constantly.
  • Wait for the ears to lift. The ears rise when something interesting happens. A squeaky toy just over your shoulder does it.
  • Light the fringe from the side. Window light from one side makes the long ear feathering glow instead of vanish.
  • Protect the white blaze. Direct sun turns white fur into a flat blank. Shade or an overcast day keeps the detail.
  • Fill the frame. At 5 to 10 pounds, a Papillon looks tiny in a wide shot. Get close enough that the face and both ears fill most of it.
  • Photograph the tail separately. If you love the plume, take one shot sitting from the side as well as a face shot.

Art Styles for an Elegant Little Dog

Vintage turns your photo into an antique sepia studio photograph. A Papillon’s upright ears and bright, upright pose suit the formal look of an old family portrait, and the sepia tones turn colored patches into soft shades of brown that still read clearly.

For something more ornate, Victorian dresses your dog in a high-collared jacket with a cameo against a painted studio backdrop. The refined little face and silky coat suit it well.

If you want light and airy, Watercolor Blue gives a soft blue wash that keeps a mostly white dog bright rather than gray. Previews are free, so try your photo in all three.

Questions

Papillon Portrait FAQ

Yes. The portrait follows your photo, so folded, feathered ears are kept just as they are. The breed’s expression and bright eyes make for a lovely portrait either way. Pick a photo where the ear fringe is lit from the side so the shape reads clearly, and preview it free in about 30 seconds.

Use burst mode and shoot in daylight so the camera can use a fast shutter. Hold a treat or toy just above the lens, or ask a helper to get the dog’s attention while you shoot. You only need one sharp frame with open eyes and both ears visible. Upload a few options to compare.

Not if the photo has detail. Bright sun flattens white fur, so shoot in open shade or on an overcast day. The patches around the ears and eyes then give the portrait its definition. Vintage turns them into warm browns, while Watercolor Blue keeps the whites crisp against a soft backdrop. Compare both free.

A 16″ × 16″ framed print ($129) or 12″ × 12″ canvas ($89) is a popular choice for a face-and-ears portrait. If your photo shows the plumed tail arched over the back, the 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) gives it room. Frames come in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak and Matte Black.

Yes. Upload one photo with both pets in it and they’ll be included together at no extra charge. Papillons are small, so pick a photo where both faces are close to the camera and in focus, and the ears of one aren’t hidden behind the other. A 16″ × 24″ print gives a pair space.
