A Newfoundland Portrait for the Biggest Heart in the House
Newfoundlands are giants with the manners of a favorite uncle. The breed was developed in Canada as a water-working dog, with a thick, oily double coat, webbed feet and a broad head with soft, drooping jowls. Today most Newfies are black, but brown and gray exist too, along with the black-and-white pattern known as Landseer, named after the painter Sir Edwin Landseer, who featured the breed in his work in the 1800s. A Newfoundland painting has some history behind it.
A Newfoundland is also very hard to fit into a frame. Between the size, the dark coat and the occasional string of drool, taking a good photo takes some planning (see below). The reward is a custom Newfoundland portrait that captures a patient, kind face.
Every portrait is created from your own photo, so your dog’s coloring and expression come through. Preview it free, then order framed from $129 or canvas from $89. For other gentle giants, try Bernese Mountain Dog portraits or visit the custom dog portrait page.

How to Photograph a Dark, Droopy, Enormous Dog
A Newfoundland can fill a doorway, so the usual photo rules need small adjustments:
- Get on their level. Shoot from the dog’s eye height or lower. From above, a Newfoundland looks like a dark rug with a head.
- Light a black coat properly. Black fur swallows detail in dim rooms. Bright, even daylight, like a shaded porch at midday, shows the sheen and the layers of the coat.
- Find the eyes. Newfoundlands have small, deep brown eyes under a heavy brow. A bit of window light in front of the face gives them a catchlight.
- Wipe the jowls. A quick towel before the shot cleans up the drool, which can show up as a shiny streak in any style.
- Use a pale background. A light wall or green lawn separates a black dog from the scenery. A dark living room swallows it.
- Capture the Landseer markings. For a black-and-white Newfie, stand a little back so the white blaze, chest and the black head patch are all visible.
- Water is allowed. A wet, post-swim Newfie with a glistening coat is a very on-brand portrait.
Art Styles for a Newfoundland
Classic Oil is the obvious fit for a dark coat. The realistic Dutch-masters look gives black fur deep, glossy highlights against a rich background, with no costume needed. It’s a good nod to the Landseer tradition, too.
Victorian puts your Newfoundland in a high-collared jacket with a cameo against a painted studio backdrop. The stately look suits a big, calm dog and goes beautifully in a hallway or study.
For a lighter touch, Watercolor Blue adds a soft blue wash behind the dark coat, and the contrast makes a black Newfoundland stand out gently instead of vanishing. It’s especially nice for a bright room. Previews are free, so try your photo in all three.
Newfoundland Portrait FAQ
Use bright, soft daylight such as open shade, and avoid dim rooms and flash. Stand a little to the side of a window so light falls across the face. A light-colored wall or green lawn behind the dog separates the dark outline. Tap the dog on your phone’s screen so it exposes for the fur, not the sky.
Yes, if your photo shows the pattern clearly. Take a front-facing or slight three-quarter shot in even light so both the white blaze and the black head patch are visible, and avoid direct sun that bleaches the white. Realistic styles like Classic Oil stay closest to your dog’s markings. Check the free preview.
A close-up of the face works well at 16″ × 16″ framed ($129) or 18″ × 24″ canvas ($119). For a full-body or large head-and-shoulders photo, the 24″ × 24″ ($149) or 24″ × 36″ ($169) framed print gives a giant breed room. Frames come in solid-wood Pecan, White Oak or Matte Black.
The portrait follows your photo, so a little drool string can appear. Wipe the muzzle before you shoot, or choose a photo with a closed mouth. Many owners love the droopy, soft-lipped look because it’s so true to the breed, though. If you’d like a cleaner finish, check the free preview and pick another photo.
Yes. Upload the photo that feels most like your dog, even an older one, as long as the face is clear. The name can be printed free and checked in the preview before you order. Many people choose Classic Oil or Black & White Charcoal for a dignified, lasting tribute to a loyal companion.
