Shetland Sheepdog Portraits for Your Sheltie
A Shetland Sheepdog looks like a small, elegant Collie, and the profile is easy to love: a long, tapered muzzle, almond eyes, small ears that fold forward at the tips and a thick mane that frames the face. Our custom Sheltie portraits are created from your own photo, so the markings and expression you know come through.
Shelties come in sable, tricolor and blue merle, usually with white on the chest, collar and legs. Blue merles can have dark eyes, blue eyes or one of each, and a sable’s ruff can shift from gold to deep mahogany depending on the light. Any of those is worth showing off.
Start with a free preview, then order framed from $129 or on canvas from $89, with your Sheltie’s name added free. For related breeds, see Border Collie portraits and Australian Shepherd portraits, or explore the full custom dog portrait collection.

Tips for Long Coats and a Sensitive Face
Shelties are quick to notice a camera and can get shy about it. A calm approach works best:
- Stay relaxed. Shelties read your mood, so shoot casually and reward with a treat afterward. A tense Sheltie gives you a worried face.
- Brush the ruff first. A fluffed mane and chest frill make a bold outline, and tangles or matted feathering look messy in a close-up.
- Light the face evenly. Sable coats can glow gold in backlight but leave the face in shadow. Soft front or side light keeps the eyes visible.
- Check the ears. Semi-erect ears that tip forward are a breed trademark. Catch your Sheltie alert, with the ears up and a little forward.
- Watch the white blaze and collar. White fur burns out in bright sun, so shoot in shade for detail.
- Mind merle eyes. Blue merles can have pale or mismatched eyes, so use a photo where both are clearly in focus.
Best Styles for a Sheltie Painting
Victorian puts your Sheltie in a high-collared jacket with a cameo against a painted studio backdrop. That refined, gentle face looks right at home in it, and the mane sits neatly above the collar.
Watercolor Earthy uses warm brown and earth-tone washes that echo the sable and gold of a classic Sheltie coat. It’s a lovely, soft choice and works well for senior dogs or a memorial.
Sparkle is polished and semi-realistic on a dreamy blue sparkle background. It’s especially flattering on blue merles and tricolors, where the cool tones and white markings stand out. Not sure which suits yours? Previews are free, so try all three.
Shetland Sheepdog Portrait FAQ
It will show what your photo shows, so pick a shot where the ruff isn’t flattened by a harness, collar or hand and the fur is brushed. Soft side light separates the layers of a long coat. Loose styles like watercolor blend fine feathering, while Sparkle and Victorian keep more definition.
The color pattern and eye color are taken from your photo, so a clear, evenly lit image helps most. Merle patches can look muddy in dim light, and one pale eye can disappear if the dog looks away. Compare styles in the free preview to see which keeps your Sheltie’s markings looking right.
They’re different breeds with a similar look. Shelties are smaller, with a shorter muzzle and a slightly softer expression, and the portrait follows your own dog’s photo, so it comes out looking like your Sheltie. If you also have a Collie or a related herder, our Border Collie page has tips that carry over.
Take photos from a little distance with the zoom, rather than pushing the phone into their face, and keep sessions short and positive. Candid shots while your Sheltie is watching something often look best. Upload two or three options to the free preview to find the one with the calmest eyes.
A head-and-ruff portrait looks great as a 16″ × 16″ framed print ($129) or a 12″ × 12″ canvas ($89). If your photo includes the chest and white collar, the 16″ × 24″ framed print ($139) shows more of the coat. White Oak and Pecan frames pair nicely with sable coats, and Matte Black with tricolor.
